maez (“maze”) is a portuguese sapphic pop and neo-soul independent project by a Portuguese singer-songwriter called Mara. Through her original music, the singer openly presents herself as a political voice, singing about her experience as a queer woman. After releasing her first EP “Native” in 2020 and her first album “ELA” in 2023, she will be releasing “GULA” next year. The album title translates to “glutony” and each track will be a take on this idea of excess. Excess of apetite, of desire, of pleasure, but usually applied to interpersonal relationships and the expectations we put on each other. This album has earned the support of the AGECOP Cultural Fund of the SPA (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores).
Every musician working in this project is a woman or queer person. This is to draw attention to the disparity of opportunities for musicians and producers who are not cis men, in the Portuguese music scene. With strong jazz and r&b influences, listening to maez, you can expect electronic soundscapes with acoustic instruments, but also a lot of scat singing and spoken word.

maez (“maze”) é um projeto independente de pop sáfico e neo-soul da cantora e compositora portuguesa Mara. Através da sua música original, a cantora apresenta-se como uma voz política, cantando sobre a sua experiência como mulher queer. Depois de lançar o seu primeiro EP “Native” em 2020 e o seu primeiro álbum “ELA” em 2023, vai lançar “GULA” no próximo ano. Neste disco, cada faixa será uma reflexão diferente sobre a ideia de excesso – excesso de apetite, de desejo, de prazer – aplicada às relações interpessoais e às expectativas que depositamos uns nos outros, contando histórias de várias situações em que a humanidade não existe sem excessos.

Todas as instrumentistas que trabalham neste projeto são mulheres ou pessoas queer. Pretende-se assim chamar a atenção para a disparidade de oportunidades para músicos e produtores que não sejam homens cis, no panorama musical português.
Com fortes influências de jazz e R&B, ao ouvir maez, pode esperar paisagens sonoras eletrónicas com instrumentos acústicos, mas também muito scat singing e spoken word.
